Hello! I'm Nicole. I'm currently a Software Engineer at Lockheed Martin and a former Software Engineer @Twitter. I have received my Master's and Bachelor's in Computer Science at UCSD. In Summer 2021, I worked at Twitter as an engineering intern on the Ads Measurement Platform team, and became a full time Software Engineer on the team from July 2022 until Nov 2022. I have previously worked at Qualcomm as a SWE intern on the Connectivity/Stability team and the Audio Processing team. Throughout my undergraduate program at UCSD, I was a computer science tutor for several classes including CSE 12 - Data Structures and CSE 110 - Software Engineering. I was also a head tutor for CSE 15L - Software Tools.

I am extremely passionate about increasing diversity in STEM, especially in CS. Throughout my undergraduate and graduate experience, I have been involved in the CSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Community. Additionally, I volunteered as a Professional Mentor for the TechWomen program while I was at Twitter to empower women leaders in STEM from Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East.

In my undergrad, I was involved in research with the UCSD Knight Lab and the Davidson Lab.

Software Engineer, July 2022 - Nov 2022

  • Worked as a Software Engineer on the Ads Measurement Platform team.
  • Implemented currency conversion for web purchases, which involved Thrift schema changes and updates to the conversion tracking and attribution pipeline. Increased advertiser confidence to adopt conversion tracking and improved understanding of their ROAs with ecommerce/shopping ads.
  • Launched Brand Survey API improvements, to verify retrievals and updates of Brand Surveys, allowing advertisers to better monitor their performance metrics.
  • Released Brand Survey and A/B testing tools to advertisers, allowing them to directly access and manage their ads.
  • Migrated 20+ scalding jobs and workflows from one build tool to another by creating a Python script that identified necessary file changes. Script was adopted across the company and reduced job migration time by 75%.

  • Mentored a woman in STEM from Central Asia as a part of Twitter's participation in the U.S. State Department-sponsored TechWomen program.
  • Served as mentee’s Product Manager. Identified a problem, collaboratively defined an approach, established success criteria, and validated the solution.
  • Ensured mentee was set up for success through a challenging, well-scoped project analyzing BigQuery datasets and updating Looker dashboards. Led to improved analysis of user impressions on ads.

  • Modified and deprecated several endpoints from internal backend services for Brand Surveys using Scala and Apache Thrift.

  • Implemented a C# based parser to decrypt binary packets of information from bin files, which automated the team's debugging process and reduced debug time by 99%.

Undergraduate Researcher, Sept 2020 - Dec 2020

  • Worked on developing python package ("geodata") to streamline the manipulation of renewable energy resource profiles and land use datasets using Python, Jupyter Notebook, and several Python libraries including geopandas and geoplot.
  • Collected land use layers and other energy datasets in order to find the most suitable regions in India towards the development of renewable energy plants specifically wind/solar.
  • Determined best regions based on political suitability, financial viability, and to what extent does building renewables in these regions influence wind and solar potential and the cost premiums to efficiency associated with these changes.

Undergraduate Researcher, Sept 2019 - June 2020

  • Continued research with the Knight Lab to simulate and classify DNA sequences.
  • Trained word embedding models, simulated DNA sequence reads, and aligned query sequences.
  • Developed configuration files to train different models on several types of archaea and bacteria using dna2vec, a library based on word2vec.
  • Simulated sequence reads from reference genomes with wgsim and queried sequence alignments with blastn and bwa.

Undergraduate Researcher, Sept 2018 - June 2019

  • Characterized metagenomic sequence data through the development of Convolutional Neural Networks using Python and TensorFlow in order to improve the overall speed of microorganism identification, since microbiome research has shown promise in diagnosing illnesses from the composition of a patient's microbiome.
  • Experimented with CNN architectures using different numbers of convolutional layers, pooling layers, and varying filter sizes to determine the most accurate model.

Erica: Product Manager and Controls Engineer

2022

  • Collaborated with emergency medicine physicians to identify user pain points and design a prototype robot for the Emergency Department.
  • Built an emergency room interactive care assistant (erica) which acted as a "vending machine on wheels" to autonomously navigate and deliver products to patients in order to automate low-value tasks for physicians and improve the patient experience.

  • Built a “greeter robot” to autonomously follow reflective tape, relay a previously recorded message and “wave” with a foam hand connected to a servo.
